Big Fish

Chicago & Neil Simon Theatre

Dream, love, live… bigger!

Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed Columbia Pictures film directed by Tim Burton, Big Fish centres on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him – most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales.

Working with 5-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman and long-time collaborator Julian Crouch, 59 Production’s Benjamin Pearcy produced the fantasy world at the centre of the show, while keeping the old-fashioned, hand-painted feel of the scenic design. Using a technique of projected painted backdrops back onto themselves to add depth and detail, Big Fish marked a development of both 59 Production’s approach to animation and its use of scenic design.

The melding of Julian Crouch’s “story-framing” sets, animated by grandly poetic projections of Benjamin Pearcy and by William Ivey Long’s wonderfully textured costumes, could not be more ideal.”
A classy, detailed, heartfelt piece full of rich music and quality writing.
Spectacular. Big Fish as Big talents, a Big cast, a Big orchestra, Big production numbers and really Big special effects. Magic.
A big, beautiful, glorious show.
A dream musical, with one knockout dance number after another. I doubt Broadway has ever seen a prettier, more sensuous show. Enchanting.
Remarkable! A show for everyone who loves musicals. Don’t dare miss this!
